Line-up

The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball’s improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
